I find the concept of a procedure calling itself profoundly astonishing. It fascinates me how elegant and simple recursion can be and how it seems like magic. Whether it's on functional programming or visually in fractals like the Mandelbrot set there's an undeniable beauty in those patterns. The hard thing with recursion isn't self-calling but rather the base case when to stop calling it. Even I don't always know when to stop.
